Abstract

Waste from used tires is an ever-increasing problem. As the volume of this waste grows, there is a need for sustainable construction material innovations that optimize the use of recycled waste while maintaining mechanical performance. However, incorporating used tire rubber into materials typically reduces flexural strength, thereby limiting its application in wall panels. This study aims to determine the flexural strength of wall panels made from used tire rubber and to assess performance improvements achieved by adding Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GRC). Test specimens consisted of mixtures containing used tire rubber, both with and without GRC. The wall panels underwent a laboratory curing process prior to flexural strength testing. Additionally, failure patterns and crack propagation were observed to identify the failure mechanisms associated with each specimen variation. The results indicate that the addition of GRC increased the average flexural stress at maximum load (flexural strength) from 1.61 MPa to 2.57 MPa. All GRC-reinforced panels exhibited relatively uniform crack patterns, characterized by dominant vertical cracks developing near the mid-span. This indicates that the failure mechanism was dominated by flexural stress. The presence of GRC also retarded crack propagation through a crack-bridging mechanism, thereby enhancing fracture resistance and the panel's load-bearing capacity.
