Abstract

Roads are an essential land transportation infrastructure that supports social and economic activities within the community. The condition of the subgrade is one of the primary factors influencing pavement strength and service life, particularly in areas with high moisture content such as agricultural regions. The Sarirejo–Jatirembe Road in Lamongan Regency has experienced various forms of pavement distress, including cracking, settlement, and surface undulations, which are suspected to be associated with low soil bearing capacity This study aims to evaluate the bearing capacity of the subgrade along the Sarirejo–Jatirembe Road based on DCP testing, laboratory CBR testing, standard compaction testing, and Atterberg limits using a quantitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing to determine field California Bearing Ratio (CBR) values, as well as laboratory tests including CBR, standard compaction, and Atterberg limits. The results indicate that the average field CBR value was 6.23%, with most values ranging from 2.29% to 5.74% and a maximum value of 18.67%, suggesting low to moderate soil bearing capacity. Laboratory CBR values were 2.07% at 10 blows, 2.33% at 25 blows, and 7.92% at 56 blows. Compaction test results showed an optimum moisture content of 18.61% and a maximum dry density of 1.579 g/cm³, while the Atterberg limits were 36.67% liquid limit (LL), 28,36% plastic limit (PL), and 8,30% plasticity index (PI). Based on these findings, the subgrade soil at the study location is classified as having low to moderate bearing capacity, contributing to pavement deterioration and requiring improvement measures to enhance pavement performance.
